The subject with which it deals has occupied a large share of my time and energy for more than fifteen years. There are some portions of the book which are necessarily of the nature of compilation, but upon most of the subjects treated I have obtained first-hand information, and have published the results in various scientific journals. On other subjects many confirmatory investigations have been made throughout the preparation of the present work, and these find their expression in the attitude adopted, whether adversely critical or otherwise, towards previous investigations.
