Indian Mounds of Wisconsin

Bok av Robert A. Birmingham
When European colonialists first settled in Wisconsin they would have found approximately 20,000 earthworks many of which were shaped into emblematic human, animal or amorphous forms. An estimated number of only 4,000 survive today. This archaeological and historical survey examines the cultural and religious background of the mounds and their builders, focusing on the effigy' mounds which were probably constructed between 800 and 1200 AD. Chapters also examine previous explanations and excavation of the mounds, their contents and their relationship to modern native Indian communities. The book concludes with tourist information on selected monuments that are open to the public.
