Out of the West
Bok av Elizabeth Higgins Sullivan
Occupied Greece, 1943. Music teacher Petros Alexiou saves the life of Thea Jamussa, a night-club singer - when she is attacked by an enraged Wehrmacht soldier and then, soon afterwards, when she faces summary execution at the hand of a Greek resistance leader. Petros and Thea embark on a four-year odyssey through war and civil war, in the course of which they form a practical and emotional partnership with British liaison officer Ian Chalmers. Ian's successful wartime exploits leave him alienated from everyday life when the conflict is over, until he meets Clare Samuel, an up-and-coming intelligence officer. Together, Ian and Clare begin to chart a course through the moral maze of a world disfigured by violence - but before they can begin building a new life in peacetime Britain, Ian must undertake one last mission to Greece. In a reality distorted by history, two couples struggle for the future. Who will cross into age together? Who will realise the possibility of love?
