Joseph Franz Rock became famous as a botanist and the ethnographer of the Na-khi (Naxi), a non-Chinese ethnic group living in southwestern China that practiced shaman cults and left thousands of manuscripts written in their own pictorial script. Rock's various endeavors are chronicled in this volume by means of newspaper articles, personal correspondence, and the journal that he kept on his voyage from Thailand to Lijang in China.
