This companion volume to Peter Pulzer's successful German Politics 1945-1995 is a study of the three failed regimes that preceded the successful German democracy that we know today - the Empire of 1871, the Weimar Republic, and the Third Reich. Pulzer emphasizes the tensions between Germany's democratic and authoritarian traditions and asks whether these three failures in nation-building were caused by errors of judgment or structural faults in institutions and political culture.
