Since Kuhn's classic The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, it has become widely accepted that there are revolutions in the natural sciences, but there is still widespread disagreement as to whether revolutions occur in mathematics. This book is the first comprehensive treatment of the question. Twelve leading experts in the history of mathematics describe major advances in mathematics, and examine, from a variety of theoretical perspectives, whether these should be considered to be revolutionary.
