Bitter

Bok av Francesca Jakobi
It's 1969, the summer of love in London, but Gilda is still trapped in the repercussions of her wartime past. Lonely and unhappy, she is cut off from her only son, Reuben, who she lost custody of when he was just a boy. Whilst she maintains the pretence of closeness, Gilda fears he'll never forgive her for abandoning him. The more she tries to close the gap between them, the farther away he pushes her. When Reuben marries a small, blonde Gentile, Gilda takes it as the ultimate rejection. She watches the two of them together, so obviously in love, and her son so removed from the stiff individual she has to content herself with. Transformed. What does this young, seemingly innocuous woman have that she doesn't? A son is meant to love his mother above everyone else. And so Gilda's obsession begins. She follows Alice to work, copies her new hairstyle, breaks into the newlyweds' home and starts to gently meddle in their lives. As she watches the young couple stumble through their new life together, Gilda is forced to properly reflect on how she ended up so alone. In turning over the past however new truths come to light and Gilda discovers just how many people might have manipulated her for their own ends. With the possibility of at last reclaiming Reuben's affections Gilda must decide between a reckoning and what it really means to be a mother.
