Building a Society for All Ages
Bok av Great Britain: Parliament: House Of Commons: Work And Pensions Committee
In 2007 there were more people in the UK over state pension age than children. This ageing society presents challenges and opportunities in social and economic areas. This strategy paper, "Building a Society for All Ages (Cm. 7655)", outlines the Government's approach to ensuring that: people are not defined by their age; prejudice does not prevent the use of the skills and experience of the older population; and, old age is no longer perceived as a time of dependency and exclusion. A forthcoming Care and Support green paper will address the care needs of an ageing population. Policies will support planning and preparation for later life, informing people of their entitlements and opportunities in areas such as sport and education. Family structures will change with more active grandparents but also more caring for elderly relatives. A families and relationships green paper in the autumn will expand on policy in this area. Increasing numbers will wish to continue working and the review of the default retirement age will be brought forward to 2010. Improving financial support is central to living a secure later life. Pension changes are already being introduced but extra support to protect poorer pensioners will be explored. Public services will also be refined and targeted at the needs of the older population, including health advice.
