The Human Tissue Authority was established in April 2005, under the Human Tissue Act 2004, to regulate the removal, storage, use and disposal of human bodies, organs and tissue for a number of 'Scheduled Purposes' such as research, transplantation, and education and training. It is also the competent authority in the UK, under the EU Tissues and Cells Directive, for regulating the donation, procurement, processing and storage of human tissue (apart from gametes and embryos); and is responsible for approving transplantation of organs and bone marrow from living donors. This is the annual report and accounts from this regulatory body, covering its activities and expenditure during the year 2007-08.
