Following on from the Committee's initial consideration of the Asylum & Immigration (Treatment of Claimants, etc.) Bill (3rd report, HLP23/HCP252, session 2003-04; ISBN 0104003804), this report examines the Bill (as amended in Standing Committee B) in the light of the Government's response. The report draws attention to a number of issues including: the need for careful examination of the potential state of destitution facing people from whom benefits and support is withdrawn in terms of human rights law violation; that carriers should be required to clearly inform travellers before embarkation of the likely consequences of destroying travel documents; and that there is a real danger the removal of judicial review of tribunal decisions could violate the rule of law.
