Challenging the notion that covert operations are a 20th-century American phenomenon, Knott presents a study of US clandestine operations extending back to the American Revolution and shows that such operations have been part of the American political tradition dating back to the founding of the Republic, and notes that these operations were remarkably similar to those of the Cold War.
