While the importance of Diodorus Siculus as a source for Greek history needs no stressing, the difficulties one encounters in evaluating his evidence are formidable. The aim of the present study, therefore, is to elucidate Diodorus' aims, sources, and methods for the historiographer and to offer detailed historical commentary on the crucial years between the King's Peace, concluded in 387/6 BC, and the aftermath of the battle of Mantinea fought in 362 BC
