The Legacy of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) in Turkey - A Study of Rule-of-Law Violations, Politically Motivated Harassment, Gender Violence and Press Freedom Violations in the Republic of

Bok av Dr Mark O'Doherty
On July 15, 2016, elements of the military attempted to carry out a coup against President Erdogan. The attempted coup left at least 241 citizens dead. In the aftermath, the government declared a state of emergency, with Erdogan's AKP Party turning a crisis into an opportunity, transforming this pressure into a full-scale purge, and closing down hundreds of media outlets, lawyers' associations and NGOs. These events - implemented by President Erdogan and his henchmen and goons from the AKP party - have set the stage for the erosion of press freedoms and human rights abuses that we see in Turkey today; the Republic of Turkey having become the world's largest prison for journalists, with an estimated 175 journalists and media workers in pretrial detention or serving sentences for so-called terrorism offenses in Turkey. Advocating both social scientific and Islamic approaches, this book endeavours to improve public policy in Turkey, so that peace and prosperity can be manifested in this beautiful country again.
