On 12th April, 1961, 27-year-old Yuri Alexeyevich Gagarin became the first human to venture into space. His one orbit flight made him the most famous man in the world. He was declared Columbus of the Cosmos. Gagarin received the Hero of the Soviet Union medal, was promoted to full Colonel and was appointed Deputy Head of the Star City cosmonaut centre. When Leonid Brezhnev deposed Khruschev, the new leaders were hostile to Gagarin. He died suddenly aged only 34.
