The proceedings papers in this collection identify and evaluate existing infrastructure deterioration problems and propose specific research needs that effectively and efficiently improve the quality, durability, and efficiency of future rehabilitation and repair (R&R) work on bridges and buildings. The 20 technical papers were presented at the Rehabilitating and Repairing the Buildings and Bridges of the Americas: Hemispheric Workshop on Future Directions, held April 23-24, 2001 in Mayagez, Puerto Rico, and focus on the state of the art in R&R of buildings and bridges, various implementation problems, and future research priorities. The topics include: R&R strategies using fiber-reinforced polymers, structural assessment and nondestructive evaluation, life-cycle evaluation for rehabilitated structures, sensors, and case studies, such as the analysis of the structural collapse of a 26-story building and the repair and rehabilitation of a pony truss span bridges during service time. The conference was the third workshop organized by the Center for Hemispherical Cooperation in Research and Education in Engineering and Applied Science and the National Science Foundation.
