Commissioned by the Commanding Officer of the German garrison Lieutenant-General Graf von Schmettow and completed in 1944 it is both a fascinating piece of history and a unique social document. Part coffee table book and part operating manual the Festung's combination of articles and instructions, combined with hundreds of photographs, hand painted maps and beautifully crafted watercolour panoramas of the coastline, makes it a definitive guide to the fortifications.
