A Dangerous Planet : Volcanoes and Earthquakes

Bok av Dr Peter T Scott
This is the sixth book in the series Adventures in Earth Science and is about movements within the Earth's crust and deformation in rock. It outlines the nature of faults and folds in rocks, volcanoes and earthquakes and uses evidence from earthquakes and other sources to suggest a model for the Earth's interior and its shape. Considerable detail is provided about the nature of rock and why it can break or bend depending upon its composition and the forces applied. The activity of volcanoes is also explained in terms of their location and source with many examples given from the author's experience in and near several volcanoes, including the dormant Deception Island in Antarctica. Earthquakes are explained as vibrations caused by the movement at the boundaries of the Earth's great plates and along old fault lines within plates. The hazards of both volcanic eruption and earthquakes are explained and suggestions are made for those unlucky enough to encounter these hazards. The book is richly illustrated with over 100 photographs, many large charts, graphs and tables and eight links to videos taken by the author in the field. This is the sixth book in the series Adventures in Earth Science and is about movements within the Earth's crust and deformation in rock.
