- This is the library catalogue of the rare-books collection of Hiroshi Mizuta, a leading international scholar of the history of European social thought and the author of Adam Smith's Library (Oxford: Clarendon Press, 2000) and many other publications both in English and Japanese. His collection is now held at Nagoya University Library. - The Mizuta Library of Rare Books in the History of European Social Thought comprises some 2,239 volumes of pre-1851 books and journals out of the total number of more than 7,000 volumes of Western publications at the Nagoya University Library. The collection includes nearly 5,000 post-1851 volumes, also from his personal library, with books and journals written by European pre-modern thinkers such as Bodin, Lipsius, and Thomas Hobbes; Enlightenment thinkers such as Voltaire, Lord Kames, Adam Smith, Joseph Priestley, Jonathan Swift, and Pufendorf; Deists such as John Toland, Anthony Collins; and Romantic thinkers such as Coleridge, Madame de Stael, Chateaubriand, the Brothers Schlegel, and Franz von Baader. - The Mizuta Library occupies a unique place among world-renowned personal collections now housed in university libraries. It is an indispensable resource for scholars and other researchers interested in the early modernization of Japan, Anglo-Japanese relations, as well as European social thought more generlly. - Fully detailed bibliographic data in the catalogue including the collation formula will enable researchers and librarians to make comparative studies of different editions of rare books.
