Castaigne (1861-1929) was a French artist and engraver who subsequently became a leading illustrator in the US. As an illustrator he captured images of the first modern olympics, drawing pictures of the 1896 Olympic Games for Scribner's Magazine. His first exhibition was held in Paris in 1884 and in 1890 he went to America where he remained until 1895. In 1891 he began his illustrating work, for which he is best known to the American public, and his images of the West won him immediate recognition, ensuring that his work was soon appearing in several of the leading magazines. On his return to France he opened a studio in Paris and remained a permanent European correspondent for The Century, making several trips back to the US to do American illustrations for the magazine.
