Reverend Patrick Augustine Canon Sheehan (1852- 1913), was an Irish Roman Catholic priest, author and political activist, known as Canon Sheehan of Doneraile, having been appointed in 1895 Parish Priest of Doneraile. His literary career modestly began in 1881 with a series of essays published in The Irish Ecclesiastical Record on subjects ranging from religious instruction in intermediate schools to the effects of emigration on the Church. During this period he began long associations with The Irish Monthly. He attracted much attention in Ireland, England, on the continent as well as in the United States through his observations in literary and religious magazines on issues related to clerical life, education and philosophy. He wrote a number of children's stories and published works of poetry, his sermons and his collected essays. Several of his books were translated. He is best remembered as a novelist, his novel My New Curate (1899) recounts an incident of a clerical appointment that may well be autobiographical.
