Part of the World Library's Classic Books, this made study a pleasant pastime for the author. Although frequently urged by friends to write his memoirs he had determined never to do so, nor to write anything for publication. The editor of the Century Magazine asked him to write a few articles for him. He consented for the money it gave me.
