A New Hope for the Gray Nation

Bok av Carol Massingill
Sue Ann Morgan -- a 70-year old, arthritic widow living in a trailer on her cousins' farm in Alabama -- takes a hobbling, afternoon walk down to the Tombigbee River and is kidnapped by a vagrant couple and loaded onto their boat. During the subsequent float down the river Sue Ann discovers another 70-something kidnap victim, Marie Borjet, on the boat and the two women are forced up a river bank to face execution. The crash of an aircraft on the hill behind their kidnappers enables Sue Ann and Marie to fall down the river bank and escape the impact explosion which apparently kills the two villains. The two women can hear moans of distress coming from the crash site and Sue Ann summons the strength to singlehandedly investigate the horrific crash scene where she discovers a small gray man who is mortally injured. Before he dies, the gray bestows a "gift" on Sue Ann. Unsure of what the "gift" is, Sue Ann relates only the pilot's death to Marie. The two women, bruised and burned, are rescued by a couple in a passing trawler and return to Sue Ann's trailer. Sue Ann, still keeping the crash scene events to herself, is accosted again by one of her still living kidnappers and begins to discover her "gift" when she hears a voice in her head saying, "Put your hand out and say, 'STOP'". In a panic, Sue Ann throws her hands out and hurls the villain against a tree where he is impaled on the stump of a limb. From then on Sue Ann must learn to deal with the wonder, power, and humor of the "gifts" she has received as she experiences miraculous reverse aging and the curing of ailments.
