An old lady remembers the tangled nightmare of her childhood: in 1528 young Bess Hardwick, her brother and sisters are forced out of their beloved home and left in the care of their troubled mother. Eventually they are taken in by a distant cousin, Lady Zouch, who makes it her business to put things right. With the other girls placed as companions in good homes and Bess' brother taken as a Ward of the Crown, Lady Zouch takes young Bess to her home near London and to the glittering and treacherous court of Henry VIII to concoct the girl's destiny: Robin Barlow.
