McGrath was a young Navy pilot in 1967 when he was captured after being shot down over Vietnam. A self-taught artist, the starkness of his drawings underscores a remarkable chronicle of lives constantly in peril, almost unimaginable in civilised times. He now lives in Monument, CO.
