On a largely uninhabited snow-covered Island in the Thames Estuary, Jim Fitz is caught attempting to steal from the three witches who live there. Finding a wooden chest in the witches' shack, he is disappointed to discover it contains nothing more than rubbish. The witches question and taunt Jim, and then show him the real truth behind The Chest of Vulcanus and the wonders therein. Making a break for the door, Jim is stopped by the evil Mdm.
