Early Detection and Treatment of Substance Abuse within Integrated Primary Care

Substance abuse can result in severe health problems; families suffer; people are victimized on account of substance-related crime; and most tragically, thousands of innocent children die each year in impaired driving accidents. Given its far-reaching impact on the welfare of society, healthcare professionals should make substance abuse a priority. Most patients with substance abuse problems present in primary care settings, oftentimes with other complaints.
