The Lukan Passion and the Praiseworthy Death

Crucifixion usually epitomized the shameful, servile and lowly. Luke sought to show that Jesus' death was noble and praiseworthy, even by Roman standards, and drew upon the noble death tradition of Graeco-Roman rhetoric to depict Jesus as a man of courage and virtue, with aspects of the character of Socrates.
