Memorial Book of Bolekhov (Bolechow), Ukraine - Translation of Sefer Ha-Zikaron Le-Kedoshei Bolechow

Bok av Y Eshel
The Jewish community had a long history in Bolekhov. In 1612 the Jews of Bolekhov were allowed to vote in the local elections. Jews in the 18th century were active in the various trades and crafts including timber, tanneries, furniture and soap. The town was known as the center of Jewish Enlightenment in eastern Galicia. There were about 3000 Jews living in the town in 1931. The Nazis invaded the town on July 2, 1941, which started the eventual elimination of this long established Jewish community. In spring of 1944, when the Soviets finally took control of the region, only a few Jews remained alive. Thus ended the Jewish community of Bolekhov. This book serves to commemorate the once vital community that no longer exists.
