»Discourses of Patriotism in Contemporary Japan«The political, socioeconomic and cultural impact of globalization has led to an increased awareness of the »other«. In Japan this has triggered vivid discussions of Japanese identity and history which have intensified since the 2000s. This study analyzes the manifestation, construction and utilization of national identity in relevant discourses and shows how globalization does not only challenge concepts of Japanese identity, but also promotes their rediscovery and reinterpretation.
