The Alsfeld Passion Play is a late medieval drama lasting three days. It belongs to the group of Hessian Passion Plays and presents the most comprehensive development of the tradition within this group. In the Alsfeld Passion Play, the work on the text and its actual performance can be seen particularly clearly. The commentary proceeds in a uniform fashion to deal with (1) the language of the Latin and Rhenish-Franconian text, (2) the liturgical and other sources, (3) its status within the group of Hessian Passion Plays , and (4) attempts to reconstruct the action on stage.
