'Historical culture' denotes how people in the present account for the past in historical scholarship, popular historiography, and in visible signs of remembrance. Wolfgang Hardtwig examines the evolution of German historiography under conditions of freedom and dictatorship using the example of the University of Berlin; he describes the impacts of bourgeois emancipation, state integration, and National Socialism on German historical culture.
