Statthalterliche Verwaltung in Der Romischen Kaiserzeit: Studien Zum Praefectus Aegypti

Bok av Andrea Jordens
No other province of the Imperium Romanum is better known than Egypt, and no other province has preserved more abundant material on the administrative activities of Roman governors. Nevertheless, the Greek papyri have mostly been viewed as only minor contributions to the study of provincial administration as a whole. This volume demonstrates that this assessment must be reviewed, by presenting varied documentation on the governor of Egypt's unique authority over matters of tax and finance. The unexpected light these texts of everyday administrative measures shed on the actions of Roman officials - and the provincial governor in particular - allows new insight into the fundamental principles of Roman access to conquered territory.
