The application of Solar Photovoltaic (PV) based electrification is imperative in the Nigerian context as a response to electricity supply problems faced by the citizens. In this study, the potentials of Solar, Small Hydro and Biomass resources in the country were highlighted. For the purpose of this research, Imo State Nigeria was used as a case study area where different views of interviewed respondents and Solar PV experts were analyzed and discussed. Results from the research show that initial cost, lack of information and awareness, and technological drawbacks are among the biggest barriers to the implementation and absorption of PV systems in the area. The need for the deployment of this technology in Nigeria was addressed and the study argued that PV systems could help increase energy efficiency and encourage local development. This study recommends the incorporation of Solar PV as an alternative supplement to the existing electricity supply system and suggests ways of tackling the identified barriers.
