Delivering Human Security? : The European Union as a global security actor and its military CSDP missions in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

Bok av Jakob Muhlstein
"Human Security" - at first sight two simple words, which possess a deep political dimension. It is these two words which we so often hear from politicians, diplomats and journalists around the globe when it comes to the reason and justification for a military intervention. The book "Delivering Human Security?" discusses the notion of Human Security in detail and takes it as a basis for a qualitative, critical analysis of the European Union's two military CSDP missions in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which took place in 2003 ("Artemis" mission) and 2006 ("EUFOR RDC" mission). Of central interest is to reveal if the goal of both EU missions was to deliver Human Security to the Congolese population, and if this was successfully done while respecting the criteria of the Human Security approach. In his book, Jakob Mhlstein also analyses if and to what extent the Human Security concept is of importance to the EU's Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). In addition, genuine European interpretations of the concept such as the "Human Security Doctrine" will be presented. By offering a comprehensive overview of different Human Security ideas, the book is not only of interest to scholars and policy-makers working on EU-Africa relations, but also to everyone who is interested in getting a better understanding of International Relations.
