Teaching and Learning L2 Grammar
Bok av Olivia Frey
Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2010 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 1,0, University of Vienna (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), language: English, abstract: 1) Discuss different strategies teachers can use to respond to L2 learners' spoken grammatical errors in the classroom and assess the effectiveness of these strategies with reference to your own learning and teaching experience and the literature.2) Study the attached unit of materials and, drawing on relevant literature, write an analysis of the approach it takes to teaching grammar. Comment on the strengths and weaknesses of the approach taken and include at least one suggestion for improving the way grammar is handled here.3) Before the course you completed a questionnaire about your beliefs about grammar teaching. Without looking back at your original answers, complete the questionnaire again at the end of the course. Then write a concise analysis of about 500 words in which you compare your two sets of answers. There is no need to discuss each statement - provide an overall comment on how the two sets of responses compare, then focus on any changes (if there are any) or, if this is the case, on the lack of change (this too can be interesting). Reflect on what your views imply for your teaching. Include the completed versions of the questionnaire as an appendix to your assignment.4) Write an autobiographical account (i.e. a short story) of your experience of grammar as a learner and (if you have any relevant experience) as a teacher. For example, as a learner did you study the grammar of your own language or of any foreign languages? What do you recall about the experience (e.g. what did teachers do? what kind of exercises did you do as a learner?). Your experience as a learner may stretch over a number of years up until the present. As a teacher, if you have relevant experience, have you taught grammar? If so, what is your approach? Write in the form of a narrative - you do not need to refer to any reading here.5) Grammar concept map6) Choose one of the electronic articles about grammar teaching available on the Moodle platform. Write a review of it which has two parts: (a) a summary of its main points and (b) some reflections on its implications for the teaching of L2 grammar.7) What do you feel are the main challenges of teaching English grammar in the Austrian secondary school context (or any other context you are familiar with). Reflect, too, on possible ways of addressing these challenges, referring to any relevant topics we have covered on the course.
