Assessment of Improved Market Infrastructure : The Impact of Improved Market Infrastructure to the Economy of Meru district in Arusha region, TANZANIA

This study focused on the impact of improved market infrastructure to the economy of Meru district in Arusha region. The study attempted to assess the contribution of AMSDP (Agricultural Marketing System Development Programme) in improving market infrastructure in Meru District. Specifically its objectives were to identify key stakeholders involved in provision of market infrastructure in the study area; to analyse the effects of improved market infrastructure to the entire study area; and, to find out how could the planning process enhanced based on what has been done in the study area.Study findings reveal that perceived benefits that is, the contribution of market infrastructure since year 2006 contributed largely to the economy of Meru District in-terms of construction of market facility as well as rural roads, which opened up the hinterland to easy access to the markets and other production sectors. More goods are now finding ready markets and hence improving the living conditions of the local communities in the study area. However, the way the planning process was undertaken missed an equitable representation of the key stakeholders in setting up the intended infrastructure.
