Bok av Joseph Nasongo
The search for ideal theoritical bases for education is an undertaking that human society confront from time to time. In Africa and specifically Kenya, the question of relevance of education and which system is ideal has preocupied education policy makers since independence. In this book, a critical analysis of views on the ideal education for Africa has been undertaken. Specifically, the views on ideal education of Edward Blyden, Jacayo Ocitti, Julius Nyerere and Gerard Bennaars are analysed.Accordingly: Blyden proposes the development of African authentic personality and confidence; Ocitti advocates for integration of African indigenous philosophical foundations of education in modern education; Nyerere on his part advocates for education for self-reliance. Bennaars advocates for multi dimensional approach, where key aspects such as: knowledge, socialisation, creativity and dialogue ought to be developed. Ultimately, critical synthesis of the various views ellicits the element of liberation and transformation as the ideal focus of education in Africa. This book is a must read for educationists, philosophers of education, political leaders, students and general public in Africa.
