Application of Nanotechnology in Periodontal Therapy : Nano-materials used for periodontal regeneration

Bok av Manohar Bhongade
Once we consider potential applications of nanotechnology to medicine, it is not difficult to imagine what nanodentistry would look like. Robert A. Frietas defines nanodentistry 'as the science and technology that will make possible the maintenance of comprehensive oral health by employing use of nanomaterials, biotechnology including tissue engineering and ultimately dental nanorobotics'. Some of potential applications to dentistry include local anesthesia, reconstruction of dental hard tissues, orthodontic treatment and disease prevention. Recent development in nanomaterials and nanotechnology has provided a promising insight into the commercial applications of nanomaterials in the management of periodontal diseases. Although various studies have been published concerning nanoparticles for periodontal regeneration it will be of increasing importance to specifically develop nanomaterials for the management of periodontal diseases. The main purpose of this review, is to provide recent development and application of nanotechnology in periodontal therapy with regard to periodontal regenerative approach, local drug delivery systems and advances in implant therapy.
