The pond bottom soil plays an important role in determining aquatic productivity in turn the yield. Low productivity is a common feature of water bodies of Tripura, India due their acidic nature. Hence, it was felt necessary to investigate the properties of the red acidic soil based ponds of Tripura with the objectives to study the role of acidic soil in relation to nutrients budget in pond ecosystems as well as to evaluate the role of C: N ratio on primary productivity enhancement coupled with the effect on growth and survival of fish at different stages.Accordingly, the experiments were designed and the observations were made in laboratory as well as in ponds during October, 2007 to March, 2009. The investigations included the amendment of soil and water properties by providing lime and organic manure treatments in moderate and splitted doses. Having made these amendments, the experimental trials were carried out on survival and growth of carps at seed rearing and grow out stages.
