Hydrocarbon Potential of the Gongola Sub-Basin : A Case Study of Kolmani River-1 Well (OPL 809) in Northeast Nigeria

Bok av Attah Atai Okanebu Alfred
The Gongola Sub-Basin have been highly under explored basically due to the poor knowledge of the subsurface geology, absence of infrastructures and also the abundant discovery of hydrocarbonin the Niger Delta Basin. Gas accumulation within the Gongola Sub-Basin can serve as bedrock for industrialization in the Northeast if fully explored. It has become imperative to open up exploration in this basin since there have already been hydrocarbon discoveries in commercial quantity in other basins along the same rift system with Gongola Sub-Basin. This study therefore focuses on the subsurface facies evaluation of Kolmani River - 1 well (Gongola Sub-Basin) to delineate the hydrocarbon potentials of the basin especially its gas potential. This study shows that there is potential to develop the gas to supply a medium gas-fired power station which could be tied into the local or national electricity network within this area, to supply local manufacturing industries and also for domestic consumption. However, it is believed that more intensive exploration would open up more hydrocarbon accumulation within this basin.
