Morbidity and Consequences of Social Anxiety in Adolescent Students

The objective of the present study is two folds. The first purpose of the study is translation and adaptation of Social Anxiety Scale for Adolescents (SAS-A; La Greca, 1998) in national language of Pakistan i.e. Urdu and to estimate its reliability and validity. The second purpose of this research is to (a) investigate the morbidity of social anxiety in adolescent students in Pakistan (b) and to explore that social anxiety is a significant predictor of adjustment problems such as self-concept, emotional distress, antisocial behavior, and anger control problem, in adolescent students. In the first phase of this study, Social Anxiety Scale for adolescents (SAS-A; La Greca, 1998) was translated and adapted into Urdu language. In this process after the stages of forward and backward translation the cross language validation was assessed in a sample of adolescent students between ages of 12-19 years. The language equivalence of the scale estimates as 0.848 at the 0.01 alpha levels by using bilingual design on target group. The SAS-A demonstrated good psychometric properties with high levels of internal consistency and reliability (.872), test retest (0.887) and split half (.817) reliabi.
