Domesticating Wildness : The Role of Map Technology and Adventurous Winter Sport in the Interaction with Wild Nature

Bok av Frydis Brekken Elvik
By employing certain technologies when seeking out landscapes still remaining beyond the human domain we may be depriving ourselves of the experience of them. We may be allowing the brightness of our innovations to eclipse the lustre of untouched nature. Technological innovation changes the way we interact with wild nature by changing the premises for that interaction. Development within map technology facilitates navigation, while innovative equipment technology increases our ability to negotiate difficult terrain. How we see nature is determined in part by how we interact with it, and our point of view is therefore altered as a result of our innovations. When these become increasingly focused on quantification - on the measuring, counting and comparison of natural features and our experience of them - then so becomes our point of view.
