Role Of Interleukin-8 In Periodontal Disease

Bok av Mary Paul Anie
Periodontitis is a group of inflammatory diseases that affect the connective tissue attachment and supporting bone around the teeth. It is widely accepted that the initiation and the progression of periodontitis depends on the interaction between varios virulent microorganisms and the host. There is a bewildering array of biological markers that have been, and continue to be,identified and associated with the disease progression.Cytokines are group of such markers which are present in saliva GCF & other body fluids.Literature says,Cells dont talk but they whisper..Cytokines are molecular messengers that acts between cells during various immuno chemical reactions and interactions.Interlukin8 is one such chemoattractant cytokine that plays a major role in recruiting Poly morphonuclear neutrophils to the site of inflammation.IL-8 activates various ICAMS and can facilitate transendothelial migration of neutrophils. The study regarding the role of IL-8 in periodontal diseases have been equivocal. As it is highly associated with the first line of defence of human body,we can go in depth to find its significance as a biological marker that can indicate the progression of periodontal diseases
