Nature of Groundwater in &; Around Satkhira, South-West Bangladesh : Groundwater scenario, A case study at Satkhira municipality, South-West Bangladesh

Bok av Subroto Kumar Dey
Groundwater from different stations of Satkhira Municipality has been analyzed for assessing the chemistry, source rock evolution and quality. The parameter analyzed are pH, TDS, EC, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, HCO3-, SO42-, PO43-, H4SiO42-, F-, I- and NO2-N. The Na+/ (Na++Ca2+) weight ratio against TDS shows that the waters are derived from Rock weathering however few samples suggests dominance of Evaporation crystallization process. Source rock deduction suggests that the aquifer is mostly carbonate weathering where also cation exchange occurred; Piper diagram suggests that the northwestern aquifers are in temporary hard and fresh in nature; southeastern aquifers are mixed in character and has tendency to shift to permanently hard water and southern aquifers are influenced by saline water and moderately hard in nature. With reference to Bangladesh and WHO standard this research states that most ground water are qualified for drinking purposes; however management options to be formulated for further exploitation.
