Using the famous, bizarre Character Heads of Franz Xaver Messerschmidt (1736-83) as its basis, this book considers contemporary uses of facial effect in videos by Douglas Gordon, Bruce Nauman, and Tony Oursler, and photographs by Arnulf Rainer, who engaged directly with Messerschmidt's heads.
