Pierre Bayle : Reader of Travel Literature

Bok av Joy Charnley
During the 16th and 17th centuries travel literature became increasingly popular in Europe. The Far East came to the fore and provided an example in tolerance, which contrasted with the persecution in Europe. Travel accounts made an impression on Pierre Bayle, a Huguenot exiled in Rotterdam, who had himself suffered persecution and in his writing waged a ceaseless campaign against it.
