In the countries of the Council of Europe and the European Union regions play an important role with regard to economic, social, ecological and legal functions of integration. This is particularly true in the case of transborder regions which pursue common interests and practical goals often based on historical experience leading to bilateral and trilateral cooperation. The symposium focused on national and intemational politics concerning transnational activities and discussed cases mainly from Europe, but also from Africa, Asia and Latin America. This volume thus gives a good overview of the current debate on regionalism.
