His major work, "The Universal Military History" in 15 volumes, Prince Nikolai Golitsyn has created in the years 1838-47 during the professors teaching at the Imperial Military Academy, where he headed the department of strategy and then - military history. Over the twenty years since the establishment of the academy did not exist a textbook in Russian military history. Golitsyn, with the permission of the academic and higher authorities, takes the first step to fill the shortage in military literature. Golitsyn was the first in Russia and Europe attempt to complete a systematic exposition of general military history and was conceived by the author as a guide to the teaching and learning of the subject.
