A copy of one of the most famous monument lists the oldest book of Rus "Tale of Bygone Years" - Laurentian list, one of the oldest and best preserved. Currently it recognized that the first original edition of "The Tale of Bygone Years" Nestor the monk lost, and to have survived the modified version. The Chronicle has incorporated a large number of materials tales, stories, legends, oral poetic traditions of various historical persons and events. Many see it as the main source for the initial period of Russian history, sometimes unnecessarily discarding other sources, if they contradict the "Tale of Bygone Years". In the "Tale of Bygone Years" written legends about the origin of the Slavs, their resettlement on the Dnieper River and around Lake Ilmen, the collision with the Khazars and Slavs Vikings, calling Novgorod Slavs Vikings, Rurik Russ led (calling Vikings), and the formation of the Rus State. Tradition recorded in the "Tale of Bygone Years", are virtually the only source of information on the formation of the first Old Russian state and the first Russian princes. The names of Rurik, Sineus, Truvor, Askold, Dir, Prophetic Oleg not found in other sources of synchronous, although attempts are made to identify certain historical characters with the above princes.
