The book tells about the various aspects of life of the indigenous population of Turkestan in the late XIX century. It is noteworthy that the author, wit, lived for many years in Tashkent (1877), fluent in local languages, in 1883, was the editor of "native" newspaper. All these circumstances made the work Ostroumova a valuable source on the history of the Uzbeks and other Central Asian peoples.
